I’ve lived in two port cities, one of which was Baltimore, the other Savannah and neither one makes me an expert in ship navigation. I also worked at the Savannah Yacht Club and even took some sailing lessons. It still didn’t make me an expert.
One of the things I did learn in those two port cities was that ports use local harbor pilots for incoming and outgoing ships. No ship entering or departing a port will have a captain or any other crew member piloting.
Accidents happen. Accidents happen because there are multiple events that come together setting the stage. We don’t know all the details of what happened and it may be months before we do.
But not knowing exactly what caused the accident from happening hasn’t stopped the right wing noise machine from trying to exploit the tragedy. I won’t detail the fantastical speculations coming from multiple RW news organizations and some of the conspiracies seen online. WOW!
Be careful in whatever you read or watch when it comes to this tragedy. Vet their sourcing.
Oh, and I was a member of the US Naval Institute (USNI), for about 15 years and even contributed a letter. I also coached a current Admiral in Pop Warner football 45 years ago. Still doesn’t qualify me as an expert.
Even though I never took a class in physics, I do understand mass and motion. Ever see a fully loaded tractor and trailer(going less than 1 mph) back into a light post? No more light post.
