Tonight, starting at 9 PM ET / 6 PM PT and running for about 15 hours, we will be taking Daily Kos offline to implement a major upgrade to the infrastructure behind the site. There should be no changes in user experience when the site comes back online, but this work will put us in a good position for major improvements to our platform in the near future.
For the curious, we are updating every single timestamp in the database, moving them from east coast time to Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC, the preferred standard time storage format (more or less what used to be known as Greenwich Mean Time). We're doing this because we're moving hosts to a provider that requires our database to be set to UTC. Why such a long downtime? Each record with a timestamp has to be edited. That includes 56 million comments, 50 million story and comment ratings, and 1.3 million stories—in other words, a lot of records!
